There is a common misconstrued idea that women are often irrational. Partially the reason for that is because they are based on the misunderstanding role of emotions in effective living, and they constitute a refusal to understand others subjective realities. Theres also the idea that rational thought is superior to emotion. Also a popular view of emotion is that its as messy , difficult, and disruptive and that they need to be kept under control. With that kind of mindset people stop exploring their own feelings and those of others and in that way they start understanding each other less. Often men are not accepted to be emotional, and that they need to be ‚tough‘. This is also going to cause issues in understanding each other.
Irrational is often thought as a label as a refusal to understand another persons reality. What people nowadays mean by „irrational“ is a demonstration of strong emotion in a situation the observer does not understand why stong emotion is being displayed.
Romantic relationships are a place where there are a lot of misunderstandings of emotions and accusations of irrationality. Everyone rely on attachment relationships for comfort, security, and love. And when one partner feels that the security of the relationship is being threatened, that is when strong emotions are displayed.
Emotional display is a signal about the course of a persons status, and it is improtant not to block it out by accusing him or her of being „irrational“. It is the same as denying that persons right for self-determination.
